Hell No We Won’t Go!
U.S. war resisters ride the underground railway to Canada

An estimated 100 U.S. soldiers, marines, and sailors have refused to fight fellow workers in Iraq and come to Canada. While most are still underground, fifteen as of this writing have claimed refugee status and speaking out publicly against the war in Iraq.

According to the Pentagon, an estimated 5,500 U.S. military personal have deserted since the invasion of Iraq, the actual number is likely much higher.

A war resisters support campaign is active in Canada, based in Toronto where the majority of war resisters live. The campaign consists of war resisters from both the Iraq and Vietnam era, trade unionists, peace activists, socialists, and anarchists.

They are fighting to force the government to let all war resisters stay in Canada without fear of being returned to the U.S. where they face jail time, persecution, and a possible death penalty.

As Jeremy Hinzman, formally of the 82nd Airborne, and the first public war resister in Canada puts it, it “The U.S. is putting the lives of its soldiers in jeopardy in order to the line the pockets of big money. I will not get blood on my hands or put my life in danger for such an endeavour.”
