Exploitation in one click? Grassroots unions start international delivery service campaign #deliverunion

Libcom.org News - Mon, 04/24/2017 - 14:20

Deliveroo and Foodora are two very young start-ups that are rapidly expanding on a global level through their high amount of start-up funds. They spark doubts whether digital capitalism brings an end to work – as some have been claiming. But in fact, the ones who bike the streets for the new internet delivery services have to go many miles through the traffic each day and are regularly put into dangerous situations. Through the #deliverunion campaign, the cyclists are now raising their voices.

In the Shadow of Social Democracy: Right-Wing Challenges and Left Alternatives

Anarkismo (en) - Mon, 04/24/2017 - 06:12
We live in a paradoxical world. Much debate on the radical left revolves around multitudes of discontented groups – sometimes lumped together as the 99%, sometimes rebranded as precariat – struggling against an abstract empire and its 1% rulers. Capitalism and class – once serving as a compass to navigate left politics through the apparently chaotic sees of everyday life – have turned into subjects of theoretical debate with little to no connection to political praxis.

Lessons of the Russian Revolution: Workers’ Revolutions are Different from Capitalist Revolutions

The Danger of Substitutionism
The Russian Revolution of 1917 demonstrates the dangers of a revolutionary minority taking over, setting up its own state, and substituting itself for the working class and oppressed.

Cajamarca: environmental and territorial dispute in “post-conflict” Colombia

Anarkismo (en) - Sat, 04/22/2017 - 16:48
On March 26th there was a popular referendum in the heart of Colombia, in the town of Cajamarca, in the department of Tolima, to decide whether the citizens agreed with gold mining in their territory or not. In this municipality the transnational corporation AngloGold Ashanti has been for years pushing for the exploitation of a gold mine they call La Colosa (Colossus), which is reputedly the largest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere. 98% of voters rejected mining in Cajamarca, mostly because of the fact that gold has no use other than producing profits and it is a most destructive activity against the environment. Between the July 15 to the April 16: From Turkish Type of War on the Masses to the Turkish Type of Presidency

Libcom.org News - Sat, 04/22/2017 - 12:11
turkey-7594.jpg

In this series of paper, I will try to show the clashes between the sovereigns of Turkey starting from the coup attempt to the fraudulent referendum that was held on 16th of April 2017. The series is planned to be three parts. First series will be on what I call a kamikaze type of coup attempt on 15th-16th of June 2016. Second series will be on the period that is between the coup and referendum. Last series will be about the fraudulent referendum that took place on 16th of April 2017 and the prospects for the coming days.

Ενάντια Στο Τέλος Της Διαδρομής

Anarkismo - Sat, 04/22/2017 - 02:11

Dublin Protests Chechnya's Queer Concentration Camps

Workers Solidarity Movement (Ireland) - Fri, 04/21/2017 - 04:00

On April 20th, a crowd gathered from 4-7pm outside the Russian Embassy in Rathgar, Dublin, to protest the recent campaign of violence against queer men in Chechnya and show solidarity with those under attack and all queer people across the planet (#chechnya100ireland). Gardaí reported that it was the largest ever protest outside the embassy.

Several placards included the (downwards) pink triangle, a reference to queer men being condemned to Nazi concentration camps. Others read ‘LGBT People Exist Everywhere’, ‘You Can’t Imprison My Sexuality’, and ‘Queer Solidarity Means Migrant Rights’. Demonstrations have also taken place in Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Paris, and Vienna. The demo was called by a couple concerned queer women who decided something had to be done - a lesson to us that we don't need to wait for 'Someone Else', a tendency we all have in this passive society.

Turkey’s referendum: a win or what...?

Libcom.org News - Thu, 04/20/2017 - 07:54
8446300-3x2-700x467.jpg

Does the electoral process, any kind of it, justify the dictatorial alteration of Democracy? Are the formation of law and the democratic procedure of decision making enough for Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to be a Sultan? The formation of the legal-mathematical formula of the referendum, as in any electoral process, cannot decide and this marginal situation in Turkey unfolds the inner contradiction of democratic political form.

A regional court has told lawyers for the hardline Christian Advocates Association they won't be allowed to sue the anarcho-syndicalist CGT union in Spain for “offending the Catholic religion,” though a number of feminist organisers are still being targeted.
